Rainy Night in Georgia - Brook Benton 1970

Blues: Τα θλιμμένα τραγούδια των μαύρων της Αμερικής. Κάποια από αυτά ήταν πραγματικά αριστουργήματα. Τα blues θεωρούνται ένα από τα είδη της μουσικής που γέννησαν το rock 'n' roll και κατ' επέκταση το rock. Επειδή τα περισσότερα από τα τραγούδια αυτά ήταν αργά, λόγω περιεχομένου, μερικοί όταν μιλούν για blues τα μπερδεύουν με τα slow κομμάτια, αλλά κάνουν λάθος. Τα blues είναι είδος μουσικής, ενώ τα slow αναφέρονται στο ρυθμό. Το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι του Brook Benton δεν είναι καθαρόαιμο blues, αλλά διαθέτει και στοιχεία soul. Η αριστουργηματική του μουσική επένδυση, πέρα από την βαθιά και πλούσια νέγρικη φωνή του Brook, εμπλουτίζεται από ένα σωρό μουσικούς που παίζουν αντίστοιχα μουσικά όργανα:

Ομολογώ πως όταν σαν μαθητής και αργότερα φοιτητής, άρχισα να εξερευνώ το rock (και όσο περισσότερο εξερευνούσα τόσο μεγαλύτερη τρύπα εύρισκα) τα ακούσματά μου από την jazz ήταν μηδαμινά. Ένα τραγούδι όμως ήταν αυτό που με κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον και με έκανε να αρχίσω να ακούω ΚΑΙ αυτό το στυλ μουσικής. Ήταν το περίφημο take five...

You've made me so very happy - Blood, Sweat and Tears 1969

Στην άνθιση του rock μέσα στην δεκαετία του '60 αναπτύχθηκαν και συγκροτήματα που πλησίασαν την jazz παίζοντας μια μουσική που κάποιοι χαρακτήρισαν σαν jazz - rock. Τέτοια συγκροτήματα ήσαν οι Chicago Transit Authority ( Chicago) και οι Blood Sweat and Tears. Και τα δύο γκρουπς κυκλοφόρησαν δίσκους μέσα στο 1969 και έκαναν αίσθηση. Οι Chicago έγιναν γνωστοί για την version του τραγουδιού "I 'm a man", των Spencer Davis Group του 1967, που ήταν μέσα στο πρώτο τους άλμπουμ. Οι Blood Sweat and Tears, που αυτοπροσδιορίζονταν ως τζαζ-ροκ γκρουπ και όχι ως ροκ-τζαζ, κυκλοφόρησαν στα τέλη του 1969 το δεύτερό τους άλμπουμ που πήρε εξαιρετικές κριτικές, με ειδική μνεία στον "εκρηκτικό" τραγουδιστή τους, τον David Clayton-Thomas.
Το τραγούδι με τίτλο "You've made me so very happy " είναι διασκευή του ομώνυμου τραγουδιού της Brenda Holloway, του1967 και αξίζει να το θαυμάσουμε.

When a Blind Man Cries - Deep Purple 1972

Η σύγχρονη εποχή φέρνει πάντα απομόνωση και οι Deep Purple το αποδίδουν αυτό εξαιρετικά στο μελαγχολικό τραγούδι τους. Άλλοι, ερμηνεύοντας το νόημα του τραγουδιού, λένε ότι αναφέρεται σε αυτόν που απέτυχε να δει καθαρά τα πράγματα γύρω του, που επέλεξε την οδό που αποδείχθηκε λάθος και η συνείδησή του τον βασανίζει πολύ. Είναι όμως σίγουρα απογοητευμένος από τον κόσμο που ζει καθώς τον περιγράφει με το χρώμα του νεκρού (pale). Όπως και να 'χει είναι ένα πολύ καλό τραγούδι που αξίζει να το ακούμε.
