Το Αμερικανικό συγκρότημα Blue Oyster Cult ηχογράφησε το πρώτο του album (LP) τον Οκτώβριο του 1971, γι αυτό και εμφανίζεται στις μουσικές στιγμές του 1971. Ο δίσκος βέβαια κυκλοφόρησε μέσα στο 1972, γνωρίζοντας σχετική επιτυχία (Νο 172 στο Billboard 200 chart). Οι πιο μεγάλες επιτυχίες ήρθαν αργότερα.
Η έδρα του συγκροτήματος ήταν το Long Island της ΝΥ και ιδρύθηκαν το 1967.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι τα πρώτα 3 albums τους είχαν ΑΣΠΡΟΜΑΥΡΟ εξώφυλλο γι αυτό και η περίοδος αυτή (1971-75) χαρακτηρίστηκε (από τους οπαδούς τους, αλλά και από τους κριτικούς, ως "the black and white years".

Το τραγούδι αναφέρεται σε μια αληθινή ιστορία, κατά την οποία τρις φίλοι που πήγαν να αγοράσουν ναρκωτικά στην περιοχή του Long Island έπεσαν σε παγίδα και πυροβολήθηκαν. Οι δύο από αυτούς σκοτώθηκαν επί τόπου, ενώ ο τρίτος γλίτωσε και διέδωσε το συμβάν.

Οι America ήταν Αγγλοαμερικανικό τρίο, που ιδρύθηκε το 1970 στο Λονδίνο και έπαιζε folk rock.
Tο αποτελούσαν οι Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek και Gerry Beckley.
Στα τέλη του 1971 οι America κυκλοφόρησαν στην Ευρώπη το πρώτο τους single με τίτλο: A horse with no name" και στις αρχές του 1972 και στις ΗΠΑ. Σε μερικές πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ το τραγούδι απαγορεύτηκε γιατί η λέξη horse, τότε, ήταν συνώνυμη με τη λέξη heroin. Ωστόσο ο συνθέτης του τραγουδιού ερμηνεύοντας το τίτλο του τραγουδιού ανέφερε: "A Horse with No Name" was "a metaphor for a vehicle to get away from life's confusion into a quiet, peaceful place".
Το τραγούδι έφτασε το Νο 1 στις ΗΠΑ, ενώ το single έγινε χρυσό σε αρκετές χώρες.
