Galatasary's Sergio Oliveira contemplates farewell
June 17, 2023
Portugal midfielder Sérgio Oliveira, who joined Galatasaray from FC Porto last summer, appears unhappy with the role he has recently played in the team. He is reportedly to consider a move should he remain a substitute.
Sérgio Oliveira moved from Porto to Istanbul on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 to play an important role in midfield. After some initial difficulties, this worked out and Galatasaray was able to win its 23rd Turkish championship title. With four goals and four assists in 32 league games, Oliveira played his part in that success. However, his form had fallen sharply in the last few weeks of the season and the 31-year-old went from being a regular to a substitute. Oliveira was not happy about that, nor about the fact that the club's management could well imagine selling the Portuguese.
Oliveira's career was marked by inconsistency
Regular player status and Sérgio Oliveira are a couple that hasn't had the easiest of marriages up to this point. The player, who trained at FC Porto, had repeatedly tried to fight for a regular place there, but had to struggle with setbacks time and again. In order to improve his chances, the now 31-year-old often went abroad on loan: for example to FC Nante, PAOK Saloniki or AS Roma. After failing to renew his contract at FC Porto, the Portuguese finally moved to Galatasaray last summer, where he signed a four-year deal. Apart from a one-year permanent arrangement with FC Paços de Ferreira from 2014 to 2015, Oliveira had always been under contract with FC Porto during his career.
Sergio Oliveira wants a regular place
Now that his regular place at Gala is in danger and the club has not yet publicly backed the midfielder, but is even open to selling it, Oliveira has expressed his displeasure among his confidants. As the Turkish newspaper "Sabah" reports, the 31-year-old is also considering a change: "If I remain a substitute, I'll think about leaving!" Should Oliveira actually not be part of the permanent staff, this would be a very expensive misunderstanding for Galatasaray. Although no transfer fee had been paid for the Portuguese, a considerable earnest money had been paid. Add to that Oliveira's annual salary of €2.75m, which puts him among the highest-paid professionals in the squad. This is hardly the salary of a supplementary player! appears clear,
