GAVRINHO – PARTIZAN PERREIRA!
Probably the most pleasant surprise of Spring football season for all beautiful game afecionados, and Partizan supporters in particular, is one Goran Gavrancic. This quiet, modest chap came to Partizan last Winter, practically out of nowhere, an instantly won over everyone within the club, players and, naturally, supporters. Since he took his centre-back position alongside skipper Nenad Djordjevic, in a second game after the Winter break, Partizan defence looked as it was granite made. His enormous experience, football knowledge, air skills, fighting spirit and exceptional modesty, led to him becoming another favourite of Partizan fans.
During the introduction press-conference upon signing, Gavrancic won over PFC supporters with a brave statement, saying he signed for Partizan to play Champions League. At that time, that was so far away in the mist, but few months later Gavrancic goes again:
- When I came over, I said I want to go into CL and I haven`t changed my mind. We picked up the title, we have Cup to won yet, and to become first genetation in club`s history to defend the double. After cup final we have a short and deserved break, soon to be replaced by training camp for us to get ready for something we all want, from the bottom of our hearts - football among Europe`s elite.
When asked what trophy is dearest of them all to him, so far, „Gavrinho“ replies:
- I find every trophy won at Kyiv dear to me, but this one is somehow different, special, as it`s won in Serbia, with Serbian people around me, as we sung songs in our language while celebrating it. I feel this title on a personal level, being aware a helped winning it, that I wasn`t just making up the numbers. Still, there`s this other part of the story / Champions League. I believe we have a quality to reach it, particularly after qualification system has been changed. But, that competition is something different in every aspect –it`s more paceful, demanding, and there are games versus different style sides. Therefore, I think reaching CL shouldn`t impose pressure on this young side, it should be a reward and I hope we`ll talk more on this issue ones we rech this objective.
How much Gavrancic is respected in Partizan, serves the statement of club`s Sports Director, Ivan Tomic, who quotes Gavrancic among 5 or 6 players who simply have to stay in the side for the next season`s challenges.
- You know what? When you play in a much weaker side than Partizan it`s flattering to hear someone has such opinion of yourself and I`m really happy here and it doesn`t crosses my mind that I might move, as I fell utterly wonderful in this enviroment. Partizan had confidence in me at certain moment and I`m not one of those forgetting it easily.
Did he feel that the fact he played in youth categories of bitter rand eternal rival would be a disatvantage wiht Partizan fans?
- Not at all. That wsn`t a problem for me, as my mind is clear, as I`ve always supported Partizan. There was no need for me to ingratiate with Partizan fans, I wanted to prove them how much I love this jersey on the pitch itself.
Towards the end, we`d like to give you more on nickname we`ve given him – Gavrinho. Actually, watching him playing during Winter preps in Turkey, PFC website reporter spontaneously called him Gavrinho, as his play resembles pretty much of legendary Brazilian national team centre-back, Pereirra. Goran was not to amused..
- Please, don`t call me that, it`s still a Brazilian name, and I`m not such class. I`m still to show was Partizan right bringing me in. There` plenty of time for nicknames.
After witnessed this Spring and, hopefully, what we about to see this hot and long football Summer, we hope that lad from Vinca will achieve one more of his dreams, along with all of us!
