Τον Φεβρουάριο του 1966 η Cher κυκλοφόρησε το Bang bang (my baby shot me down) ενα single που έγραψε ο τότε σύζυγός της Sonny Bono. Το τραγούδι έφτασε το Νο 2 στις ΗΠΑ και το Νο 3 στο Η.Β. και πέρασε το εκατομμύριο αντίτυπα σε πωλήσεις.

Τον Οκτώβριο του 1966 το συγκρότημα των Herman's Hermits κυκλοφόρησε το "No milk today", ένα ακόμη τραγούδι του τραγουδοποιού Graham Gouldman, που έδωσε τραγούδια του και στους Yardbirds που έγιναν επιτυχίες και αργότερα ίδρυσε τους περίφημους 10cc. Αυτό ήταν το δεύτερο hit του Gouldman για τους Herman's Hermits, καθώς είχε προηγηθεί το "Listen people"

Τον Απρίλιο του 1966 κυκλοφόρησε το πιο επιτυχημένο single του Frank Sinatra, το οποίο έγινε Νο 1 στις ΗΠΑ και το Η.Β. όπως και το άλμπουμ που το περιείχε. Για το τραγούδι αυτό ο Sinatra κέρδισε το βραβείο Grammy για την καλύτερη ανδρική ποπ φωνητική ερμηνεία και το βραβείο Grammy για την εγγραφή της χρονιάς , καθώς και ένα βραβείο Grammy για την καλύτερη διασκευή που συνοδεύει έναν τραγουδιστή ή μουσικό για τον Ernie Freeman στα Βραβεία Grammy του 1967.
Το τραγούδι έγινε γνωστό από τον Frank Sinatra, αν και αρχικά δόθηκε στη Μελίνα Μερκούρη , η οποία όμως θεώρησε πως τα φωνητικά ενός άνδρα θα ταίριαζαν καλύτερα στη μελωδία και ως εκ τούτου αρνήθηκε να το τραγουδήσει.

H προέλευση της μελωδίας αρχικά πιστώθηκε στον Γερμανό Bert Kaempfert. Αργότερα όμως σε μια συνέντευξη στους New York Times, ο μουσικοσυνθέτης Avo Uvezian μίλησε για την προέλευση του "Strangers in the Night", λέγοντας ότι είχε συνθέσει το τραγούδι για τον Frank Sinatra ενώ βρισκόταν στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Όταν ρωτήθηκε γιατί ο Kaempfert ισχυρίστηκε ότι είχε συνθέσει τη μελωδία, ο Uvezian σημείωσε ότι ο Kaempfert ήταν φίλος του και στη βιομηχανία, οπότε ο Uvezian του ζήτησε να δημοσιεύσει τη γερμανική έκδοση στη Γερμανία για να μπορέσουν να μοιραστούν τα κέρδη, επειδή ο Uvezian σκέφτηκε δεν θα ελάμβανε δικαιώματα στις ΗΠΑ.

Μερικές φορές υποστηρίζεται ότι ο Κροάτης τραγουδιστής Ivo Robić ήταν ο συνθέτης του "Strangers in the Night" και ότι πούλησε τα δικαιώματα στον Kaempfert αφού συμμετείχε σε αυτό, χωρίς επιτυχία, σε έναν κορυφαίο γιουγκοσλαβικό διαγωνισμό τραγουδιού Split Festival . Σε μια συνέντευξη στην κροατική τηλεόραση με τον Κροάτη συνθέτη Stjepan Mihaljinec, ο Robić είπε ότι είχε συνθέσει ένα τραγούδι "Ta ljetna noć" (Εκείνη τη νύχτα του καλοκαιριού) και το έστειλε σε ένα φεστιβάλ στην πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβία, όπου απορρίφθηκε.

Ο Robić ισχυρίστηκε ότι αργότερα, ο Kaempfert "συνέθεσε" το ίδιο τραγούδι για εκείνον, το οποίο αργότερα έγινε γνωστό ως "Strangers in the Night". Αυτό δεν τεκμηριώθηκε ποτέ.

Τον Ιούλιο του 1966 οι Lovin' Spoonful κυκλοφόρησαν την μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία τους, το Summer in the city, που έφτασε μέχρι το Νο 1 στις ΗΠΑ.
Εν αντιθέσει με τα περισσότερα καλοκαιρινά τραγούδια που μιλούσαν για την υπέροχη ζέστη και τον ήλιο του καλοκαιριού, το τραγούδι αυτό περιγράφει ως κάτι δυσάρεστο τη ζέστη και τον θόρυβο της ημέρας και ως κάτι ευχάριστο την ανακούφιση που προσφέρει η δροσερή νύχτα, η οποία επιτρέπει την έναρξη της νυχτερινής ζωής.
Ηχητικά το τραγούδι αυτό αποκλίνει από τον πιο ελαφρύ ήχο, μέχρι τότε του συγκροτήματος, διαθέτοντας ένα πιο σκληρό ροκ στυλ.

O Jeff Beck ήταν ο πρώτος (lead) κιθαρίστας των Yardbirds από τον Μάρτιο του 1965 που αποχώρησε ο Eric Clapton. Στα τραγούδια των Yardbirds που πόσταρα για το 1965 και 1966 μετείχε αυτός.
