PR N°16 - Important decisions headline first Central Board at House of Basketball

MIES - FIBA's first Central Board of 2013 drew to a close at the newly-inaugurated House of Basketball on Friday with a number of big decisions being made and key information shared.

The main points that came out of the two-day (20-21 June) event included:
- Approving modifications to improve the competition format for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain
- Confirming Ankara as the second host city for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey and unveiling the event’s logo
- Approving Dubai and Slovak Republic as the hosts for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships for Men and Women respectively
- Discussing ways in which to improve the governance structure
- Approving changes to the basketball rules that will into effect on 1st October 2014

The members of the Central Board approved a proposal to modify the existing format of competition for the FIBA Basketball World Cup (30 August-14 September 2014). The modifications will see 24 teams qualified from Groups A and B in the Preliminary Round feed into one Final Round venue (Madrid), while teams qualified from Groups C and D will feed into another Final Round venue (Barcelona).

As a result of this, once the tournament’s draw has been carried out in February 2014, the venues where respective teams will play from the start to the end of the tournament will be known. This will enable timely planning and optimal preparations for the teams and their fans as well as more efficient and targeted promotion for FIBA’s flagship event.

Also, it was confirmed that the "Road to Spain 2014" will officially start on 1 July 2013. A tip-off event in Madrid will launch a full-scale promotional campaign to promote the tournament around the world.

There was important and exciting news regarding the FIBA World Championship for Women (27 September-5 October 2014) too, with the confirmation that Turkey’s capital of Ankara is to be the tournament’s second host city - Istanbul being the first - and with the event logo being unveiled.

The members of the board approved the hosts for next year’s FIBA U17 World Championships. The women’s tournament is to take place in the Slovak Republic (26 June-6 July 2014) and the men’s in the city-state of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (7-17 August 2014). Both championships will feature 16-team fields for the first time.

Having reviewed its strategic plan and the four pillars for the term 2010-2014 - the House of Basketball; 3x3; FIBA competition system and calendar as of 2017; governance - the Central Board is very satisfied to have fulfilled one of those with FIBA moving into its new headquarters.

With that pillar completed, the Central Board is working on its governance structure in order to meet the big changes that will come because of FIBA's very ambitious growth plans in the future.

The Central Board approved changes put forward by FIBA's Technical Commission to the Official Basketball Rules. These changes will come into effect on 1st October 2014. Click here to find out what those changes are.

Joanna Sutherland, FIBA's new Head of Sports for Women’s Basketball, was formally introduced and it was announced that women's basketball will be one of the main talking points at the next Central Board, which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 23-24 November 2013.

FIBA's 3x3 gave a presentation to members of the board on the growth of the discipline since the first season of its World Tour took place in the summer of 2012. With the second season getting underway in July, this was the perfect occasion to highlight how the interest and participation in 3x3 has grown exponentially in a year.

FIBA is to find out in early August if the International Olympic Committee will approve its bid to have 3x3 as part of the Olympic Basketball Programme at the 2016 Rio Games.

Finally, the Central Board reviewed cases of national member federations - in particular those where there is government interference and issues related to age manipulation - and adopted a very firm stance, recommending that sanctions be imposed.
