Shikabala finally completed his move from Zamalek to Sporting Lisbon in the early hours of Saturday after a last-minute hurdle incurred the player’s wrath and put the deal on the verge of collapse.
The winger joined Sporting on a four-and-a-half year deal with a release clause of 45 million euros, the club said on their Facebook page.
"It was a difficult negotiation, but what matters now is that realized a great dream and I am at one of the biggest clubs in Europe," Shikabala said.
Sporting initially rejected an earlier agreement between Shikabala and Zamalek that would have seen the player pay the Cairo side $250,000 from any future sale and another $500,000 later in addition to a transfer fee of $250,000 to be paid by the Portuguese outfit.
Shikabala pleaded with Zamalek, who said they wanted guarantees that the player would be able to pay the amount he owes them, to soften their stance to allow him to join Sporting shortly before the closure of the January transfer window.
A final agreement was reached between Sporting and Zamalek that would see the former pay the Egyptian outfit $514,000 over two years in addition to 5 percent of any future sale, according to football agent Abdel-Rahman Magdy, who acted as a go-between.
Earlier on Friday, Shikabala said Sporting considered Zamalek’s demands “farcical”.
“This is unfair. What Zamalek are doing is very unfair. They don’t want to accept the $250,000 transfer fee Sporting are due to pay,” the 27-year-old said in a phone interview with Egyptian satellite channel Sada El-Balad,
“They want me to pay them an additional $250,000 from any future sale and another $500,000 [later]. I will not play again if that transfer fails. After I saw the reception I got in Lisbon I won’t play in Egypt again.”
Shikabala passed a medical earlier in the day to come within a whisker of sealing a surprise move to Sporting after falling out with Zamalek over unpaid salaries.
Zamalek's new coach Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' said last week he would try to coax Shikabala into staying but the temperamental player stood firm.
A product of Zamalek's youth academy, the talented schemer is a fan favourite but is often criticised for failing to live up to his potential due to his on and off-field antics.
His only spell in Europe was with Greek side PAOK between 2005 and 2007.
