SCOUTED FOOTBALL
Scenic Scouting with Stewart: Hamza Barry
Stewart Brown October 6, 2018 0
Football careers can often take a scenic route to the top. Whether it be a rags to riches story, or a route with plenty of stops: it doesn’t matter how you get there, as long as you get there.
Hamza Barry, now a 23-year-old, started his career in his native Gambia, with Gambia Ports Authority, before joining Maltese side Valletta in the July of 2013. After an in-and-out 2013-14 season, Valletta saw the best from Barry in the 14-15 in an attacking midfield role. Starting only 18 league games, he racked up 10 goals and a few assists, and he scored at least twice in four separate games. Capping off a great season, he picked up the Maltese FA’s Best Young Player of the Year award. All plain sailing then, but the route would soon feature a few awkward left turns.
His tremendous work in Malta didn’t go unnoticed: after rejecting a new deal at Valletta, Barry signed a one-year deal with Cypriot side, Apollon Limassol. He’d go on to make a total of zero appearances for Limassol. A month after signing in July 2015, he was sent on loan to the Israeli side, Maccabi Netanya, where he’d play 21 times, but was later recalled by Apollon Limassol, reportedly due to his loan club’s poor league position. Seven months later, Barry was then sent to historic – but struggling – Hapoel Tel Aviv. Ranked just two places above Maccabi Netanya at season’s end, Barry would play 12 times for Hapoel, without really impressing.
His third loan of the year would prove to be the most fruitful. In the August of 2016, Barry joined Croatian side Hajduk Split on a temporary deal which included an option to buy. Hajduk Split saw enough in his first season to activate the clause of around €250,000, and Barry signed a three-year deal. At Valletta, he was a goal-getter and a genuine attacking threat, but it would take a change of position to really bring the best out of Hamza Barry.
During his time in Israel, and at Hajduk Split, he had featured in a number of positions. After his time in Malta, he was deployed in attacking midfield, then out wide, but mainly in central midfield. None of those, I believe, were the best fit for him and his skillset.
After very tenuously being linked with a move to West Ham this previous summer, Barry was moved to a primarily defensive role in midfield and, whilst Hajduk have struggled, the 23-year-old has shone.
The Gambian international is a bully at times. He’s strong physically, he’s quick enough, and he’s a nightmare to get the ball off. Many have tried, many have failed. Potentially the most promising aspect of his game is how he reads the game off the ball in midfield. He may not man mark but he has a feel of where the ball will go, suckering the passer into making what he thinks is a good pass, only to have it pick-pocketed with an interception or a good tackle.
With the ball, he has the ability to cruise past opponents, but more important to his position is that he isn’t wasteful. He doesn’t have to go chasing his own mistakes like a lot of defensive midfielders do. He wins the ball and keeps it. Barry completes 90% of his passes so far in the Croatian First Football League and – while contextless pass accuracy percentages tell us very little – it’s almost a prerequisite of defensive midfielders to rank highly in that metric.
His weaknesses are purely dependant on what position you judge him in: in a deeper role he’s great at picking out forwards, but in an advanced role, with the a higher degree of direct competition, he tends to blow good opportunities to make the most impactful decisions in possession. Defensively he can get caught ball watching in his own third of the pitch, which would need to be ironed out before stepping up to a better league.
He is likely to leave Hajduk Split sometime soon but, for me, it’s imperative that he’s used as a defensive midfielder who can contribute to attacks, rather than a central midfielder who can contribute defensively. Speaking of that next move, the talk of West Ham and the like is certainly misguided. He isn’t quite ready to play Premier League football as of yet, but he is certainly ready for another step up.
Nikola Katić: one of three Rangers summer signings from Croatia
One move which would interest me is a transfer to Rangers. Steven Gerrard has recruited Nikola Katić, Borna Barišić and Eros Grezda from Croatia during the summer, and adding Barry would be a perfect fit – but numerous clubs will be competing for his signature in January, or in the next summer window.
Hamza Barry has certainly taken a scenic route, but he’s firmly on his way to success.
